Come Write With Me In September!
My new class, Grief and Memoir, is coming to a bookstore (or a Zoom room) near you
Hi friends! I have a new writing class that you’re cordially invited to attend in September. It’s called Grief and Memoir: Writing to Heal.
As longtime Engulfed in Flames readers know, I’ve written quite a few essays about my dad’s passing in 2018 and how that experience left a lasting mark on me as a person. But my writing practice around grief has really transformed over the years.
I’ve gone from barely being able to write about what happened to using memoir as a tool to make sense of my most difficult experiences. In turn, memoir has become a way for me to process big losses in life and relate to others. It’s also catalyzed a lot of internal healing.
I wanted to design a class where I could share my journey with all of you. And, of course, discuss how we can all use writing as a tool to heal and find community.
Whether you’re grieving a recent loss or seeking to make sense of a big life change that happened years ago, this class is for you. (Please note that my definition of grief is pretty loose — we could be talking about the actual death of a friend or family member, or the loss of a job, place, or path in life. However you interpret this term, please know you are welcome to join.)
I was originally going to do this class in August, but some things came up and we moved it to September. Plus, August is just a crazy month for most people. I hope these new dates (below) are more accessible than the ones we had before.
There will be two sessions: an in-person class at WordHaven Bookhouse in Sheboygan, WI, and a virtual class that anyone can attend. You can sign up for both classes on the WordHaven website. Each one is $10 per person.
In-person class at WordHaven: Saturday, Sept. 7 (sign up here)
Virtual class: Saturday, Sept. 14 at 1pm Central Time (sign up here)
And if this topic isn’t your cup of tea, just hang tight. I’m planning a few other classes for the fall that might strike your fancy. Stay tuned!
